03. Mellowship Fellowship

Lyrics Video

🇬🇧About Song

“Mellowship Fellowship” is one of the most playful songs on this album.

It features a retro-flavored vocal sound, a cheap electric piano tone, and flashy orchestra hits. However, this is not a song that simply tries to be strange for the sake of being strange.

Inside this song are slightly exaggerated phrases inspired by Showa-era Japanese popular songs, the atmosphere of B-class delinquent manga represented by works like “Be-Bop High School,” and both love for and playful teasing of 1980s-style pop music.

At the same time, the song also includes a sharp comment on the many “fake city pop singers” who simply jump on the city pop trend and sing in a way that sounds vaguely like “Mariya-sama.” Of course, this is not making fun of Mariya Takeuchi herself. On the contrary, because the real thing is so great, the irony is directed toward the phenomenon of people copying only the surface and creating something that merely feels “city pop-ish.”

Sometimes, the mood or the trend begins to walk on its own, separate from the real substance of the music. This song contains a little bit of rebelliousness toward that situation.

In the lyrics, a man and a woman blame each other.

  • “You never keep your promises.”
  • “You’re just a womanizer.”

They attack each other from their own positions, but at one point, the roles of the man and woman seem to switch. There is a little bit of an idea similar to “Your Name.” in this structure.

In other words, even if you think you are blaming someone from the other person’s point of view, that alone does not solve anything. Even if the positions are reversed, even if the words become stronger, as long as you are looking down on the other person, you only keep going around in circles.

The lyrics also include the line, “Riding your motorbike at full speed / Then dropping me off around the mountain pass.”

At first glance, this line may seem almost absurd. However, it is based on a meme-like image from Japanese delinquent manga culture, especially the world of works such as “Be-Bop High School.”

It evokes the image of a self-important “bad boy” riding around on a motorbike, showing off his power with a flashy girl behind him, only to treat her cruelly and leave her behind on a mountain road as if she were no longer needed.

In the song, this line appears in the part where the woman is dissing the man. It is not meant as a realistic scene, but as an exaggerated and ironic image of a foolish man trapped inside an old-fashioned fantasy of masculinity.

What I really wanted to say through this song is that, whether in love, music, or human relationships, what is ultimately necessary is respect for the other person. But I did not want to express that as a serious lecture. I wanted to express it in a very silly, ironic, and exaggerated way.

The title “Mellowship Fellowship” comes from Mellowship Jazz Club in Chiang Mai, where Cherie Pops has held many of its main live events.

The phrase came to ICHI-SAN suddenly while he was walking back from the restroom before a live show. From there, the words “Mellowship” and “Fellowship” were combined and expanded into a wordplay full of romantic feelings, friendship, obsession, resignation, love, and anger all mixed together.

Later, however, I found out that Joy, the owner of Mellowship Jazz Bar, is a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and that their song “Mellowship Slinky in B Major” contains a line where “mellowship” and “fellowship” appear together.

I came up with the title without knowing that, but whether it was coincidence or something closer to fate, the live house in Chiang Mai and Joy’s musical background ended up connecting in a mysterious way.

In that sense as well, this song carries the night air of Chiang Mai and the memories of the live house where Cherie Pops grew up.

“Mellowship Fellowship”

Be-Bop High School”

“Mellowship Fellowship”
